Learn to sail in August

sailing with SSYC

Every year Seattle Singles Yacht Club sponsors two races–the winter Goosebumps series and an Oct. 7, 2017 benefit for Northwest Harvest.

Seattle Singles Yacht Club offers sailing classes annually with both classroom and on the water instruction.  This year’s classes were in August at Captain’s Nautical Supply store, 1120 NW Ballard Way, Ballard.  The dates were Aug. 10, 17, and 24th from 6:30 p.m. until 9 p.m.  No previous sailing or boating experience was required. Students then signed up to go out on members’ boats to practice what they learned

The Basic Sailing Course offers  classroom training with experienced sailors and provides a solid foundation of sailing basics. Registration fees include a keel boat book and course notes.

Upon completion of the three classes, students may sign up to sail with SSYC skippers in order to practice what they’ve learned.  These classes provide a good introduction to sailing, especially for those who’ve never been on a sailboat or have minimal experience.

The  $60 registration fee includes textbook, course notes, three classes and  on-the-water practice sails. After class  completion, students attend a Seattle Singles Yacht Club meeting to sign up for the practice sailing trips. SSYC experienced skippers will take students on their boats and show them how to apply what was learned in class.  After successful completion, students receive a certificate of class completion.

The Captain’s Nautical Supply store offers a range of boating related books, charts and other nautical gear which is available for purchase before and after class.
