ABOUT US

For over thirty years, Seattle Singles Yacht Club has promoted the sport of boating through day trips, cruising, sailboat racing and other forms of boating combined with social activities.

We are not your standard yacht club.

We have boat owners with power boats and sail boats who share boating opportunities with members and in return can build a team of crew for trips, racing, overnights, and even trips abroad.

If you have a boat, SSYC is a great opportunity to meet other people who enjoy boating and are happy to crew for your day trip, cruise or one of the many SSYC boating events.

As members of SSYC, we bond over our love of boating but also provide weekly social opportunities. SSYC has a Happy Hour every week, regular dance opportunities and members frequently coordinate special trips to exotic places.

We are an all volunteer club and we rely on our members to actively participate in the activities that keep the club a fun and active place.

SSYC is a 501(c)7 non-profit organization governed by a board of volunteers.

We are run by our members

SSYC is organized and run by the membership. Our members decide the objectives of the club on an ongoing basis and we strive to attract other like-minded individuals.

Club leadership is provided by members elected by the membership into roles such as Commodore, Vice Commodore, Rear Commodore, Treasurer, Secretary, and Past Commodore. The roles of Fleet Captain and Member at Large are appointed positions.

There are many volunteer opportunities available other than these positions. SSYC has volunteers that host our happy hours as well as plan our dances, organize racing events, etc.

Due to our affinity for boating and socializing, we have formed tight relationships in the club over the years that have resulted in life long friendships, long term relationships and marriage.

In the case of members who marry, we have a branch of membership known as Associate Membership.

An Associate Membership enjoys all of the boating and socializing benefits of a standard Annual Membership but does not have voting rights or the right to hold office.

Annual Memberships are the most prevalent form of membership but Casual Membership is available at a weekly meeting and is available for the week.

Our History

SSYC was organized in 1991 by a group of singles who wanted to meet other single adults who loved boating. Since some of the founders were sailboat owners, the club was originally called Seattle Singles Sailing Club. As the club grew and more skippers bought power boats, the club’s name was changed to reflect the diversity of boat ownership. However, the club’s burgee still displays a sailboat to reflect the club’s origins.

Over the years, as members have found the camaraderie available through shared interests, couples have met and married. The members didn’t want to lose their friends to marriage so the category of Associate Membership was created. This is available for couples who marry, where at least one member has been in the club for one year or longer. We expect both members of the couple to stay in the club together and pay dues. Special exceptions to this rule are granted to members whose wife/husband cannot participate due to special circumstances.

As a non-profit, we look forward to supporting our favorite charity—Northwest Harvest—by hosting a race, auction, dinner and dance each fall. Through our support, Northwest Harvest has purchased over one million meals for hungry local families.

Throughout the years we have organized a variety of events that encourage members to socialize, relax, meet other members–and most importantly–to have fun. Events include sailing, power boating, whale watching, happy hours, house parties, pig roasts, wine tastings, Halloween costume contests, watching the Christmas ships by boat and more. We originally would meet on Monday nights at the Elks at Shilshole but now we meet at Puget Sound Yacht Club on the North shore of Lake Union.
